This is my 1/48 FW-190S-5 Wurger trainer. It was
used by the Luftwaffe to transition Ju-87 and BF-109 pilots to the venerable
Fw-190. It is not the MPM offering, but a simple kit bash project. The donor kit
was a 1/48 R/M Promodeler FW-190G. I used parts from my spares box to make it
into an FW-190 S-5 which was a modified Fw-190A-5 airframe. FW-190A-8's were
also modified into Fw-190S-8's. On both these aircraft, wing guns were often
deleted as well as most radio equipment to save weight due to the extra cockpit,
but upper cowl guns were often retained.
The kit went together with the usual quirks of
the DML based Fw-190 kit. I used an long OOP XtraParts FW-190S resin conversion
which included the turtle deck, aft cockpit, canopy rails and two sets of vac
canopies, one for the S-5 and one for the S-8. I added brass safety wire for
brakes lines and some left over photo etch bits. . Also, I had used the
extra prop included in my Tamiya FW-190 D-9, which is the one with the
narrow chord. The reason I did this was because the DML/Dragon kit
props are too broad according to my references.
Painting was done with Gunze Sangyo and Tamiya
acrylics. Weathering was accomplished with artists oils and Prismacolor pencils.
It was an enjoyable kit to build and is a must for Wurger enthusiasts.
